SEL with Apni Shala

Team Apni Shala, along with our partners from Mental Health space, brings to you a bouquet of different online workshops. Whether you are a young person, a teacher, a parent or absolutely anyone interested in building your own and others’ social-emotional development, there’s something for you!  So check out the list and sign up!

Common guidelines:

  • All workshops will be organized on Zoom unless specifically mentioned otherwise. 
  • Signup for each workshop is required for you to receive updates and other materials from the facilitators. 
  • Money collected through these workshop will go towards supporting mental wellbeing for children and their families in some of the most marginalised migrant communities in Mumbai. Their lives have been deeply impacted due to COVID-19. Apni Shala team is working towards creating larger support for them. To know more about our COVID-19 relief measures, please visit here.

For Children


Workshop 1: Kahaani Time

What to expect?

Amrita says, “I have a ‘difficult-to-put-in words’ love for books and stories and I think they have immense value in our development whether it is our language development, social or emotional development. etc.”

During these sessions, children will read books aloud and talk about them together. The books are carefully chosen to build social skills and emotional resilience of young people.

When? Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings every week, typically 45 minute sessions 

Language? – Hindi, English 

Who can attend? – Children and caregivers (and anyone else who loves books)

Facilitator: Amrita Nair, Director of Research & Development and Library Educator. With a Bachelors’ degree in Psychology from Mumbai University, and a Masters’ degree in Social Entrepreneurship from TISS, she is a part of the founding team of Apni Shala. She has also been trained in personal counseling and Rational emotive behaviour therapy. Since 2013, she has been an active facilitator of Theatre of the oppressed. In 2016, she attended the New Leader’s Week with the National SEED project and has been facilitating Mumbai based SEED groups.

What will you need during the workshop?

  • Zoom app on an internet-enabled device

For Adults

Workshop 2: Book-ish Love: Nurturing safe emotional spaces 

What to expect?

Most of us have been discussing how absurd, confusing, unforeseen, scary

  1. Learning to use books in diverse ways eg: Magical letter writing 
  2. How to choose books that contribute to nurturing safe spaces 
  3. Book-ish love

Who can attend? Teachers, Mental health professionals, Therapists, Parents & Caregivers, Students, Anyone with a love for children’s books & children

When? 05:00pm to 07:30pm IST, Fri 8th & Sat 9th May 2020 (Participants will be required to attend both days)

Language? English

Facilitators: 

Raviraj Shetty is an occupational therapist and library educator. He is also a trainer, supervisor and manager at Ummeed Child Development Center, a non- profit organization which collaborates with children experiencing disabilities and their families. He believes in his heart that people are not the problem, but the problem is the problem. Curiosity, Hope and Magic are things that guide his life.

What will you need during the workshop? Stable internet connection, Notebook, Pen, Zoom app, Internet-enabled device (computer or smartphone), and Imagination and excitement 🙂

Fee? We are doing this event specifically as a fundraiser for Apni Shala And hence it does not offer an exemption for fees. It is a paid event.

Workshop 3: Conversations around Identity and Wellbeing

What to expect? We invite you to participate in a conversation space where you recognize different elements of your own identity and explore these questions together:

  • How does the current climate induced by COVID-19 impact our social and emotional wellbeing?
  • How are our experiences being shaped in home and other settings, with respect to some of our identities such as gender, sexuality, religion, class, etc? Are there experience of discrimination, biases or prejudices that are becoming visible for us?
  • How do we choose to care for ourselves and others around us?
  • What are some alternate care practices that we may engage with?

हम आपको एक वार्तालाप स्थान पर भाग लेने के लिए आमंत्रित करते हैं, जहाँ आप अपनी स्वयं की पहचान के विभिन्न तत्वों को पहचानते हैं और इन प्रश्नों को एक साथ देखते हैं:

  • COVID-19 से प्रभावित हमारे अभी के वातावरण की वजह से हमारे सामाजिक और भावनात्मक भलाई पर क्या असर दिख रहा है?
  • हमारे घर में और अन्य सेटिंग्स में हमारे अनुभव कैसे आकार ले रहे हैं, खासकर हमारी कुछ पहचान जैसे लिंग, सेक्सुअलिटी, धर्म, वर्ग, आदि के संबंध में? क्या भेदभाव, बायस या प्रेज्यूडिस का अनुभव होता हुआ दिखाई दे रहा हैं?

Facilitators:

Bimba Chavan is a counsellor, curriculum designer and a facilitator innovating mental wellbeing conversations in the school system of Mumbai for over 8 years. She operates from a space of joy, accountability and care. Creativity acts as her anchor in all her interactions. Narrative ideas inform her work practices in the scope of designing a preventive mental health program with Apni Shala Foundation in the capacity of a curriculum consultant. She currently resides in Melbourne and works as a high school counsellor and a workshop facilitator recruiting a wider audience in the mental health context.  

Rohit Kumar works as the CEO at Apni Shala and is on consulting staff at Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity (SEED) project by Wellesley Center for Women, Wellesley College, USA where he co-facilitates diversity workshops for educators. Rohit holds an M.A. in Education from Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai and Masters in Software Systems from Somaiya Institute of Management Studies and Research, Mumbai, India. However, he thinks his most important learning comes having worked with students and educators at The Akanksha Foundation, American School of Bombay and Apni Shala Foundation.
